The origins of the Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation can be tracked back to the Himsel’s Museum (Himselsches Museum) founded by the Riga City Council in 1773. It was based on the private collection of naturale and art objects belonging to Riga doctor Nikolaus von Himzel (1729-1764) and was intended for public display and education.
