Views of Riga in the Museum’s Collection of Paintings

More than fifty paintings are on permanent display in the museum, but hundreds more are stored in the repository, and together they form a collection of museum paintings of outstanding significance in the cultural and art history of Riga and the Baltic region.

A significant part of the Museum’s collection of paintings consists of views of the city of Riga, including comprehensive panoramic landscapes and harbour views, as well as images of parts of the city related to the genre of architecture that testify to the formation and development of the city’s image, buildings and silhouette from the 17th century to this day.

The oldest and most valuable of them were commissioned by various city institutions for the purposes of representing the image of the city. Important in this respect are, for example, Carl Traugott Fechhelm’s early 19th century landscapes of the city of Riga, commissioned by the Himsel Museum. Historically, they were in the Riga City Library (Rigasche Stadtbibliothek), later included in the collection of the Dom Museum and today preserved in the Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation.
